Writing By Writers (WxW) is a 501(c)3 non profit organization whose mission is to create a rigorous, compassionate and inclusive environment to learn the art of reading and writing from accomplished authors. WxW hosts multi-day writing workshops for people interested in writing fiction, non-fiction, memoir and poetry. The workshops are taught by nationally-known, published authors, who are adept at teaching the craft of writing to all levels of student. In addition, participants learn how to read other’s work critically and apply those lessons to their own writing.
In the spirit of generating new work to jump start the new year, Writing By Writers is pleased to announce our annual short short writing contest. Winners will receive free tuition to the Get The Lead Out online generative workshop January 16 - 18, 2026 with CMarie Fuhrman, Pam Houston and Paul Lisicky

Word Limit: 250 words
Rules: Your piece can be fiction, non fiction, memoir or poetry but it must include a texture related to a tree, a kind of rock or category of rocks (ie geology), a sound a bird makes, a snack you can buy at 7-11, and a reason for hope.
We wished this went without saying, but use of an A.I. Generator such as ChatGPT, iA Writer, MidJourney, DALL-E, etc. is explicitly prohibited for work submitted to all Writing By Writers contests, workshops and program applications. The information derived from these tools is based on previously published materials and using these tools without proper citation constitutes plagiarism. All work submitted in any form to Writing By Writers must be your own.
